NOTHING TO HIDE? LOVERS ON AND OFF SCREEN

When it comes to sex, a lot of things are better in theory than in practice. Probably number one on the list is a 13 inch cock. But also high in the Top Ten is porn in which a straight boy has gay sex for the first time. The fantasy is that he goes apeshit because he never realised how great it feels to have a cock up his arse. The reality is that he’s doing it for the money and looks as though he’d be having more fun shelling peas.

Actually lack of enthusiasm is endemic to porn. How could it be otherwise? Most of the time, models are bumming people they met thirty minutes before the camera started rolling. They don’t fancy each other. And they can’t pretend they do. This is a daft situation. Porn is the only art form that can get away with being really bad. It doesn’t matter if it’s out of focus. If it’s horny, we’ll still get hard. But if it’s not convincing, if we can’t even suspend disbelief, it fails.

The answer to this problem seems obvious. Models shouldn’t be paired up unless they’re attracted to each other. Better still, they should be real-life partners, so besotted that when they look into each other’s eyes, smoke comes out of their ears. You might have thought that there’s not much chance of this happening. After all, surely even couples who happen to work in porn don’t want their most private moments recorded for posterity? Well, you might be surprised. I went down my files and after only a couple of hours I found more than 30 porn duos who at one time or the other in recent years have been lovers both on and off the screen.

SPENCER REED: WE JUST DRIVE EACH OTHER WILD WHEN IT COMES TO SEX. WE’RE LIKE TWO ANIMALS. SOMETIMES AFTER WE HAVE SEX WE THINK, DAMN! I WISH THERE’D BEEN A CAMERA ON THAT.”

The most famous gay porn pairing is Francesco D’Macho and Damien Crosse, who got married in Madrid in 2009. (Watch the loved-up duo burning up the screen in Raging Stallion’s Porn Stars in Love). Other well-known couples include Carlo Masi and Adam Champ, Steve Cruz and Bruno Bond, Logan McCree and Vinnie D’Angelo, Xerxes and Huessein, and Roman Heart and Benjamin Bradley. Damon De Marco and Hunter James were such a hot item that a documentary was made about them, Damon and Hunter: Doing It Together.

Possibly not all these relationships are built to last. When your partner is regularly fucking some of the most beautiful men on the planet, it’s hard not to get jealous. It seems to help if porn models meet outside the industry and gradually get to know each other. This is what happened with Steve Cruz and Bruno Bond. Another couple who met like this are Spencer Reed and Phillip Aubrey, who gave me some fascinating insights into that unusual phenomenon, making love in the sex industry.

Spencer, described in the October 2010 QXMEN as “this gorgeous hunk of a man”, agreed that there’s something special about the porn scenario in which nothing has to be faked. “You can definitely see chemistry on camera and you can definitely tell when two people are into each other”, he told me on the phone from the Washington home he shares with Phillip. “It adds a whole other level when there’s intimate feelings. It’s real and it’s raw and it’s hot to see two people who are actually in love having sex.”

Watch Spencer and Phillip having sex on Dominic Ford’s site. There’s a naturalness that gives the illusion that there’s a spycam in their bedroom. Then watch Spencer paired with other guys. They kiss and they fuck and they get off. But you realise something’s missing. “Yeah, the first time it felt totally natural,” Spencer says of his first scene with Phillip. “It was almost as if the cameras weren’t even there, you know? We just totally went at it and we weren’t trying to show off, we just let it go.”

Spencer and Phillip met in 2009 when they were other guys’ dinner dates. “My initial reaction,” says Phillip, “ was DAMN because he was very attractive! But I liked his vibe, I liked his energy, I liked the way he looked at me. I just wanted to connect.” Initially they didn’t realise that they both worked in porn. It wasn’t until the second or third date that they began talking about it. “It was good because it gave me some immediate connection to him,” Spencer recalls. “We knew a whole lot of the same people, we had a lot of the same friends. We had a lot in common. It was kind of nice. At that point he had not worked in the industry for a few months. I said, ‘Well, I’m doing this a real lot, making pretty good money, things are good. It’d be cool if you got back into it and we could do it together.’

Spencer’s rationale is that they both enjoyed the exhibitionist thing so much that they might as well take it to the next level. “We just decided that we had something to offer, being together, and our sex at home was really pretty amazing so we said we may as well show it off on camera,” he claims. Phillip was more cautious. “In this industry there’s always a chance you take by exposing what you hold sacred in a relationship and showing it to the rest of the world,” he admits. “Also you’re inviting the rest of the world into your privacy as far as comments or posts that people make about you.

It turned out that Phillip was right to be cautious. Pressures were such that, after a year, the couple announced they’d split. They’re now back together again and they say it’s for keeps. They’ve reached a surprising compromise. In future they’re only going to have sex on screen with each other. “Over time,” Phillip explains, “the more we fell in love with each other, it became harder because we didn’t want to share that aspect of our relationship with anyone else.”

Spencer and Phillip agree about the difference between public and private sex. “Well, of course, you know back home it’s much more intimate, it’s more passionate,” Spencer tells me. “I guess like when we’re having sex at home we never stop kissing each other. But on camera we get to explore things we don’t really get a chance to do at home.” Phillip enlarges on that last comment. “I’ve had a couple of really great experiences with Spencer on camera,” he confesses. “Just recently we did a shoot for Bound Gods, where he really pushed my limits and it was amazing. It was unlike anything I’ve ever done before on or off camera and with him it made the experience all the more emotionally and physically exhilarating.”

When Phillip has a porn experience like that, does he want to go home and have sex again? “When we’re done I always wanna have real sex!” he laughs. “We’re holding something back and it just drives me crazy.” What’s the word for the something they hold back?  “What would that word be, Spencer?” Phillip asks his lover. A pause. Then they agree: “The lust. There’s something we’re not willing to show the rest of the world because it’s ours.”
