Meet Terry Goddard. He’s one half of the dynamic duo behind the Saunabar in Covent Garden, one of the first health spas in London to cater for gay and bisexual men.

Terry and his partner Guy bought the venue, lock stock and barrel in 1999 but it was by no means the stylish and sexy Saunabar that guys head to today to relax, unwind and meet like-minded guys.

We’ve been told the previous owner was very strict about what went on between the guys who frequented the sauna and was known to patrol the venue shouting “Hands above the water!” to guys relaxing in the large bubbling Jacuzzi. Unlike today, there was no labyrinth of comfortable restrooms for guys to chill out and get a little privacy.

Terry proudly tells us that one of the first things he did when he got the keys to the Saunabar was buy a stack of new mattresses to put down for guys to rest on. Since then there’s been constant refurbishments and improvements, which have made the Saunabar the warm and inviting venue that it is today.

The Saunabar was the first of its kind to have an alcohol license and now, not only do they have a fully stocked bar serving beers, spirits and cocktails but they also have a very reasonable food menu serving hot and cold meals, tea, coffee, home-baked cakes and even bottles of aromas.

Another reason to visit Saunabar is the staff. They’re not only friendly but they’re fit too! That also goes for their professional masseurs who’ll relieve you’re aches and pains with a full body or head massage in the newly refurbished treatment rooms.
